![]() In 2011 ARC members decided upon The Marathon Project as the organisation we would like to support through our donations. The Marathon Project is a not for profit organisation established to address the incidence of chronic disease and inactivity within Indigenous Australia. They train young Indigenous men and woman to run, jog or walk and make activity and regular part of their lives. They also focus on sending individuals to the New York City Marathon... a dream for most runners at some point in their running career. On November 6th, seven Indigenous men and four women will head to New York City to participate in the world’s most famous foot race – The New York City Marathon. They have trained hard under the guidance of The Marathon Project and have earned their spot on the team heading to New York. We wish the 11 runners the best and congratulate them on their effort! For more information please check out their website. All donations so far are very appreciated, lets keep the ball rollin' and help support The Marathon Project. We would encourage every runner to donate either through a 'gold coin' donation after any of our runs to Amy, Aleisa or Rich Jnr. OR by directly deposting any amount into the ARC bank account. Donations History In 2010 the ARC raised $750 towards the Melissa White Memorial Laboratory which is a foundation that members of the groups chose after running in the 10k Carisbrooke Classic. After the run we met Annie the mother of a little girl who passed away from Leukaemia. The event was raising money for the Melissa White Memorial Laboratory, and all of us who heard Annie talk knew this was where we would like to be sending our gold coin donations. Previously we have helped support Reuben Kosgei's Riverside Academy in Kenya. Reuben is an elite athlete and won a gold medal in the Sydney Olympic Games in the 3000m steeple-chase. He has since set up an education centre academy which provides education for children as well as athletics training for certain of the students who have potential as runners. Donation Tally 2009: $450 2010: $750 2011: donations will be tallied in June 2012. |
